Lawn dethatching
Your lawn is being
smothered from below.
Thatch is the layer of dead stems and roots that builds up between the grass and the soil. Past about a centimetre thick, it starves the roots of everything they need.
What it is
Removing the layer that chokes your lawn.
As thatch builds up, water, air and fertiliser stop reaching the soil. The lawn thins out, browns off in patches and stays spongy underfoot no matter how much you water it.
Dethatching lifts that dead material out with a purpose-built machine, without tearing up the healthy turf. It looks dramatic for a week, then the lawn comes back thicker than it has been in years.
How we can help
- Core samples to confirm dethatching is what your lawn needs
- Machine dethatching that spares the healthy turf
- All debris raked, bagged and hauled away
- Fertiliser and watering-in to drive the recovery
- Best paired with aeration for a full lawn reset

FAQ
Dethatching questions, answered.
How do I know if my lawn needs dethatching?
If the lawn feels spongy underfoot, browns off quickly in heat, or water sits on top instead of soaking in, thatch is the usual culprit. We confirm with a core sample before recommending it.
How long does the lawn take to recover?
It looks rough for about a week, then bounces back over 3 to 4 weeks with watering and the feed we apply. Most lawns look better than ever within a month.
How often does it need doing?
Most Sydney lawns only need dethatching every 2 to 3 years. Buffalo and kikuyu build thatch faster than couch, so we adjust the advice to your grass.
